Cloud Computing: Multi-cloud Solutions Transform the Face of IT

By Dick Weisinger

‘Multi-cloud’ is just that.  It is the use of more than a single cloud for business solutions.  The clouds used could be Private, Hybrid or Public cloud components.

A report by VirtueStream/Forrester found that 86 percent of businesses say that they already are using multiple cloud vendors.

Putting together a multi-cloud strategy that is effective though isn’t easy. Calvin Rowland, Vice President at F5 Networks, said that “EVERY cloud is different. They’re like snowflakes. They SEEM the same to the naked eye, but they are, in fact, each unique. Application deployment is different. Programming interfaces are different. Security policy instrumentation is different. The list goes on.”

But developing a solution to enable multi-cloud can result in transformative change.

Eric Marks, VP of cloud consulting at CloudSpectator, said that “the multi-cloud ramp-up is one of the ultimate wake-up calls in internal IT to get their act together. One of the biggest transformative changes is the realization of what a high performing IT organisation is and how it compares to what they have. Most are finding their IT organisations are sadly under-performing.”
