Cisco is back again with their annual estimate of how much data the world is churning out. Cisco predicts that by 2021 the annual amount of data created will exceed 847 zettabytes, a factor of four increase over the amount of data created in 2016.
Data centers are also growing to support the increase in data. By 2021 data centers will be storing 2.6 zettabytes of data, also an increase of a multiple of four. The amount of data classified as “big data” will grow by a factor of eight and account for nearly one-third of all data stored in data centers.
Kip Compton, vice president of Cisco’s Cloud Platform and Solutions Group, said that “data-center application growth is clearly exploding in this new multi-cloud world. This projected growth will require new innovations especially in the areas of public, private and hybrid clouds.”
