Internet of Things (IoT): 10 Predictions for the Future

By Dick Weisinger

“If you think that the internet has changed your life, think again. The IoT is about to change it all over again!” says Brendan O’Brien, Chief Architect and Co-Founder of Aria Systems

Just hype and bluster from another vendor?  What does the future really hold for the Internet of Things (IoT)?

In December, IDC published predictions for IoT:

  • The cloud will become the focus of IoT.  Within five years 90 percent of all IoT data will be hosted in the cloud
  • IoT data breaches are certain to happen.  Within two years, 90 percent of IoT systems will have had a security breach.
  • Processing of IoT data will move closer to ‘the edge‘.  In three years, 40 percent of IoT processing will be done on the edge.
  • IoT data will overwhelm some systems. As many as 10 percent of networks are expected to be affected
  • Data centers and enterprises will need to change their current policies and business models to adopt to BYOD and IoT
  • Within five year, all industries will roll out IoT initiatives.  The principle IoT activity today (50+ percent) is  centered in manufacturing, transportation, smart city, and consumer applications
  • By 2018, local government spending will account for a quarter of all government spending as local governments attempt to build innovative and sustainable smart cities
  • Within three years, 60 percent of IT solutions that originally were designed as proprietary and closed-source will move to open source
  • Within five years, wearables will challenge smartphones as an alternative
  • In three years, Millennials will be in a position to further accelerate adoption of technologies like IoT

Vernon Turner, SVP of Research at IDC, said that “the Internet of Things will give IT managers a lot to think about.  Enterprises will have to address every IT discipline to effectively balance the deluge of data from devices that are to the corporate network. In addition, IoT will drive tough organizational structure changes in companies to allow innovation to be transparent to everyone, while creating new competitive business models and products.”
