Digital Librarians: An Essential Worker as the Enterprise Digital Footprint Grows

By Dick Weisinger

As enterprises increasingly digitize their operations, the amount of digital data and assets owned is growing rapidly.

Beyond navigating content stored in databases and content repositories, data assets that need to be managed include software code repositories, microservices, APIs, toolchains, open source code and community-shared infrastructures. Managing digital assets like these require that the librarian have significant technical understanding. It is a plus for digital librarians to come with some experience as either a developer or DevOps engineer.

In an article for SDTimes, Dr. Arnal Dayaratna, research director at IDC, lists some of the tasks that enterprise digital librarians might be involved with:

  • enable easy search and retrieval of assets
  • document the origin, lifecycle and evolution of assets
  • track asset and associated security breaches and vulnerabilities
  • ensure that digital assets are part of business continuity planning

Dayaratna said that “while code is stored in repositories, the surrounding universe of data stores that populate applications, APIs, testing results and production-grade implementations of applications across multiple platforms are not. The entirety of these artifacts are essential to documenting the digital history of enterprises and their management is invaluable both to innovation as well as to legal considerations about the intellectual property of a digital solution. As digital transformation initiatives intensify, the need for full-time resources to manage digital assets will intensify and become a core component of the developer workforce in all enterprises.”

The success of enterprise digital transformation not only relies on CEOs of enterprises anymore. The latest reports indicate that CIOs play a critical role in the strategic discussions and successful implementation of digital transformation (DX).
