Health Care in the Cloud: Despite Security Concerns, Early Cloud Use Widespread

By Dick Weisinger

Health care organizations say that they already are significantly using the cloud, based on a cloud survey by HIMSS.  Although 75 percent of organizations surveyed said that they preferred using a private or hybrid cloud.

  • 83 percent say that they are using cloud services
  • 86 percent say they are already hosting applications in the cloud
  • 79 percent are using the cloud for disaster recovery and backup
  • 78 percent say that the cloud is their primary data storage
  • 77 percent say that they are archiving data in the cloud

Not surprisingly, health organizations consider security as one of their top concerns and factors when entering into a relationship with a cloud provider:

  • 58 percent say the physical security offered by the service provider is important
  • 47 percent say they check the technical security of the service provider
  • 41 percent say the administrative security offered by the cloud service provider is important

The report found that “the future of cloud services is positive, especially among those health care organizations that already use cloud services.  Nearly all of the health care organizations presently using cloud services reported plans to expand use of cloud services in the future.”
