Javascript: Popularity of Tools in the JS EcoSystem

A survey of 28,000 Javascript developers provide some insight into the direction that the Javascript language is taking.  Developers rate the Javascript language and the tools ecosystem that has been built up around it.

  • Flavors of Javascript – ES6 dominates, followed by the long-time reigning ES5.  Interest in TypeScript is growing quickly.
  • Front-end Tools – React is the dominant framework, and interest in Vue is increasing quickly.  Surprisingly interest in Angular 1/2 is dropping.
  • Back-end Tools – Express is the most popular, followed by Koa, Meteor and Hapi.
  • Testing Tools – Jasmine is most frequently used for client-side testing, and Mocha is used frequently for server-side testing.
  • State Management – REST APIs are the clear winner for managing business logic on the server-side
