The world of art isn’t immune to changes in technology. Artificial Intelligence is already exerting an influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artists are beginning to use AI as a tool to assist in the creation of art, but algorithms are going even further to be used for independently creating artwork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2018, an portrait created by an AI algorithm sold at Christie’s for $432,500<\/a>. One of the artists involved in the project that generated the portrait, Hugo Caselles-Dupr\u00e9<\/a>, said that<\/a> “we found that portraits provided the best way to illustrate our point, which is that algorithms are able to emulate creativity.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ahmed Elgammal<\/a>, director of the Art and Artificial Intelligence Lab at Rutgers University, said that<\/a> “if you look just at the form, and ignore the things that art is about, then the algorithm is just generating visual forms and following aesthetic principles extracted from existing art. But if you consider the whole process, then what you have is something more like conceptual art than traditional painting. There is a human in the loop, asking questions, and the machine is giving answers. That whole thing is the art, not just the picture that comes out at the end. You could say that at this point it is a collaboration between two artists \u2014 one human, one a machine. And that leads me to think about the future in which AI will become a new medium for art.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Art dealer Aidan Meller created a humanoid robot called Ai-Da that is equipped with algorithms for creation art. Exhibitions of the works from Ai-Da paintings, sketches and sculptor have been shown at the Barn gallery at Oxford university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
