Artificial Intelligence is powered today by standard CPU or GPU chips. But there’s another type of chip which may be better suited for AI processing. ‘Neuromorphic’ chips are designed to function the way that neurons work the human brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neuromorphic chips have been designed to detect motion and sound much the way the human brain cortex works. Many believe that neuromorphic chips have the potential to be the successor to the current generation of standard chips being used. Conventional chips pass information sequentially from one transistor to the next, but neuromorphic chip process data in parallel and any one connection can communicate to another over millions of possible pathways called ‘synapses’. Neuromorphic chips are also attractive alternative to standard chips because they require significantly less power to operate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pierre Cambou<\/a>, Principal Analyst for Imaging at Yole, said that<\/a> “neuromorphic engineering is the next step towards biomimicry and drives the progress towards AI.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Irving Wladawsky-Berger<\/a>, a Research Affiliate at MIT Sloan School of Management, said that<\/a> “neuromorphic computing chips will likely be the future of not only artificial intelligence but also of the blockchain, as they give us an ability to develop low energy consuming cryptocurrency as well as distributed systems. Neuromorphic computing and chips bring the much-needed evolution in computer hardware.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By 2025<\/a> neuromorphic chips will be embedded in smart phones and that they will be essential components in future IoT devices. They will be important in transportation, space exploration, defense and manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A report by Grand View Research<\/a> estimates that the global neuromorphic computing market size will reach $6.48 billion by 2024.<\/p>\n
