The disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has been a driving force behind a surge in adoption of automation and AI technologies. Businesses have taken up digital transformation, workflows, and automated processes as top priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The introduction of AI-driven automation is expected to pick up speed<\/a> over the near future. Technologies like AI, robotics, computer vision, sensors, and improved connectivity will be increasingly deployed in production workplaces. Technology is always on, and unlike humans, is immune from disease and strikes that could bring about work stoppages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mark Muro<\/a>, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, said that<\/a> “when you have the effect of social distancing and infection, it adds to the rationale for the substitution of machines for humans at point-of-sale positions like a cashier for food service, or in hospitals.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, Chatbots are being increasingly deployed to replace work previously handled by customer service call centers. AI and natural language processing has improved the ability of chatbots to be responsive to user questions. Chatbots are being used by a wide range of organization types.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mohandas Pai<\/a>, formerly a tech executive at Infosys, told the Financial Times <\/a>that “seeing as you\u2019re working from home and there\u2019s a lag in the service, we\u2019ll use more AI, more chatbots, more automation. That is permanent change, automation will hit that sector very deeply.”<\/p>\n
