Blockchain is a technology that encrypts data and stores it in large number of servers to ensure that information cannot be lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blockchain is most commonly associated with BitCoin and cryptocurrencies, but use cases for the technology span projects like secure sharing of medical data, personal identity, real-time Internet of Things (IoT), and voting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United Nations has experimented with blockchain and recently published a guidebook<\/a> that describe practical uses of the technology and some of the on-going blockchain projects at the UN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ant\u00f3nio Guterres<\/a>, United Nations secretary-general, said that<\/a> “for the United Nations to deliver better on our mandate in the digital age, we need to embrace technologies like blockchain that can help accelerate the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Janet C. Salazar<\/a>, permanent representative to the United Nations, said that<\/a> “never before have we seen such a technology as transformational as blockchain \u2014 whether it’s being used to send immediate foreign aid via crypto, or to generate IDs for refugees \u2014 it has the power to change the way the developing parts of the world work while enabling more developed nations to efficiently share resources. The United Nations focuses largely on taking a decentralized perspective to the way the world works \u2014 and to adopt blockchain technology across systems would serve the best match.”<\/p>\n
