The growth of Edge Computing will lead to a proliferation of devices connected to the internet that need to receive AI and machine learning model information and\/or report back to the cloud sensor and status information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edge and 5G technologies are complimentary. 5G enables fast speeds, ten times higher than today’s 4G networks. Edge computing reduces latency because it brings compute capabilities to the local area and reduces the need to send large amounts of raw data back to the cloud. The two technologies together mean that a network can support large numbers of devices with fast data exchanges and low latency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dan Rodriguez<\/a>, vice president and general manager of Intel\u2019s network platforms group, said that<\/a> “it\u2019s the same sort of transformation that we drove in the world of data centers in the 1990s and technologies we homed in the cloud allowing our customers to get to market much more quickly. This is really the first time you are seeing compute and communications converge.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5G has benefits, but it will take some time to roll out to private areas and reach widespread adoption. On the other hand, private 5G, for example, a on a network owned by a single business or locale, will likely see adoption much sooner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
