While it may come as no surprise that businesses are behind the curve in adoption of Social Media when compared to adoption by consumers, you might expect businesses to still be light years ahead of how state and federal governments are reacting to Social Media.\u00a0 Government is in fact lagging business in Social Media use, but the gap is closing.\u00a0 A survey by Saba <\/a>found that while only 15 percent of businesses use no form of social networking tools, 29 percent of government have never given social networking a chance.\u00a0 There are actually examples of innovation that are coming out of some federal and state agencies.
\nNASA is truly a stellar example of how government can collaborate with citizens and like-minded technology buffs.\u00a0 The NASA CoLab program provides a collaborative space that bring together scientists and engineers for sharing knowledge and ideas.\u00a0 Another example is the CIA that uses Facebook to recruit college students for internships and jobs.\u00a0 And the Environmental Protection Agency uses Facebook as a sort of knowledge hub where employees can share knowledge and and enhance communication and connections.<\/p>\n

An interesting question posed to public sector managers is to rank the value that Social Networking can bring to organizations.\u00a0\u00a0 Not too unexpectedly, the results of the survey show that the most important use of Social Networking tools is for knowledge collection and sharing.<\/p>\n
