The prediction of protein shape is expected to greatly assist life science and medical researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proteins control the inner workings of cells and it is the shape of the protein that defines what the protein does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>This is a big deal.  In some sense the problem is solved. We have been stuck on this one problem \u2013 how do proteins fold up \u2013 for nearly 50 years. To see DeepMind produce a solution for this, having worked personally on this problem for so long and after so many stops and starts, wondering if we\u2019d ever get there, is a very special moment.<\/p><cite><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/deepmind.com\/blog\/article\/alphafold-a-solution-to-a-50-year-old-grand-challenge-in-biology\" target=\"_blank\">Professor John Moult, Co-founder and Chair of CASP (Critical Assessment of Protein Structure Prediction<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/deepmind.com\/blog\/article\/alphafold-a-solution-to-a-50-year-old-grand-challenge-in-biology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">)<\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/deepmind.com\/blog\/article\/alphafold-a-solution-to-a-50-year-old-grand-challenge-in-biology\" target=\"_blank\">, University of Maryland<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>It\u2019s a game changer. This will change medicine. It will change research. It will change bioengineering. I suspect many will leave the field as the core problem has arguably been solved. It\u2019s a breakthrough of the first order, certainly one of the most significant scientific results of my lifetime.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div
