A Terabyte isn't What it Used to be

Times were if anyone talked about data sets that verged on being as large as a terabyte of data there was a sort of awe just thinking about the possibly of collecting and actively using that much data. Times have changed and a terabyte is becoming the norm rather than something very exotic.

A survey of 328 IT profressions by InformationWeek found that 87 percent of them now have more than 1 TB of data, and 29 percent of them have more than 100 TB. And only 15 percent of them feel that the data they are managing is growing at a rate that they can comfortably support. Data from color images, video, audio and virtual disks are rapidly filling up disk after disk.

The data management problem is complicated by the fact that the enormous growth is happening at the same time that IT budgets have been slashed or are stagnant. The good news is that storage technology is improving and that vendor prices are dropping. Technologies like Fibre Channel SANs have become much cheaper, and products purchases are still fitting into tight budgets.

Some of the storage technologies that InformationWeek says will be hot in 2010 include:

Business continuity and disaster recovery

Deduplicaton

Storage and File Virtualization

Thin Provisioning

Automated Tiering

Encryption

Solid state drives and Massive Array of Idle Disks (MAID)

<input type="hidden" id="jsProxy"
