{"id":1069,"date":"2010-02-17T07:00:49","date_gmt":"2010-02-17T15:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.formtek.com\/blog\/?p=1069"},"modified":"2010-02-17T07:00:49","modified_gmt":"2010-02-17T15:00:49","slug":"technology-what-to-make-of-java","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/technology-what-to-make-of-java\/","title":{"rendered":"Technology:  What to Make of Java?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Is Java still cool?\u00a0 Is it relevant?\u00a0 In the &#8217;90s Java had great mindshare.\u00a0 The &#8216;write once, run-anywhere&#8217; slogan was an exciting promise to developers that their lives would be simplified.<\/p>\n<p>But things are changing.\u00a0 With competition from languages like Ruby, interest in Java is slowly declining.\u00a0 It&#8217;s interesting to see that the <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"Tiobe Programming Community Index\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tiobe.com\/index.php\/content\/paperinfo\/tpci\/index.html\">Tiobe<\/a> Programming index shows Java and C running neck to neck in popularity.<br \/>\n<center> <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tiobe Programming Community Index\" id=\"image1068\" src=\"http:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/TiobeIndex.png\" \/><\/center>And now, Oracle&#8217;s acquisition of Sun is throwing up a big question mark around the Java language.\u00a0 In fact, it is making some people very uncomfortable, especially competitors to Oracle that have built large parts of their business around Java, like SAP and IBM.Last November, <a title=\"SAP slams Oracle over Java\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sdn.sap.com\/irj\/scn\/weblogs?blog=\/pub\/wlg\/16648\">SAP&#8217;s CTO slammed <\/a>Oracle and said that &#8220;to ensure the continued role of Java in driving economic growth, we believe it is essential to transition the stewardship of the language and platform into an authentically open body that is not dominated by an individual corporation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rod Johnson of SpringSouce says not to worry.\u00a0 He <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"Rod Johnson on Oracle\/Java\" href=\"http:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/s\/article\/9147460\/Java_s_future_uncertain_under_Oracle_grip?taxonomyId=14&#038;pageNumber=2\">commented <\/a>that oversight of the Java language probably won&#8217;t change that much under Oracle.\u00a0 &#8220;Oracle is incredibly dependent on Java for many of its core programs.\u00a0 The revenue that Oracle derives from Java being healthy far outweighs any revenue that it could obtain through more aggressive control.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Oracle&#8217;s Thomas Kurian, VP of product development, <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"Oracle and java\" href=\"http:\/\/www.informationweek.com\/news\/software\/integration\/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=222600531\">called <\/a>Java a &#8220;crown jewel&#8221; coming to Oracle as part of the Sun acquisition.\u00a0 He said that his top priority is to improve the performance Java for the nine million developers that are using it and revitalize the Java Community Process.<\/p>\n<p>Sun also brings to Oracle their GlassFish application server.\u00a0 That&#8217;s a total of three application server technologies that Oracle now controls. GlassFish is to be used as part of the reference implementation for use with Enterprise Java.\u00a0 Oracle will promote BEA WebLogic for use in production systems.<\/p>\n<p>What to make of it?\u00a0 Not sure.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll have to wait and see what Oracle does.<br \/>\nOne thing is clear though.\u00a0 Even though many operations at Sun were frozen over the last year while the Oracle acquisition was being sorted out, Java has been evolving.\u00a0 Java 7 is now available.\u00a0 And some of the <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"Performance Metrics for Java 7\" href=\"http:\/\/www.taranfx.com\/java-7-whats-new-performance-benchmark-1-5-1-6-1-7\">performance metrics<\/a> for the 7 release show some eye-popping numbers &#8212; more than 50% faster than Java 5.<\/p>\n<div id=\"refHTML\"><input type=\"hidden\" id=\"gwProxy\" \/><!--Session data--><input type=\"hidden\" onclick=\"jsCall();\" id=\"jsProxy\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"refHTML\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a class=\"lightsocial_a\"
