First there was Open Source — for software.\u00a0 The next phase is about data — Open Data.\u00a0 And local, state and federal grovernments are setting the trend.<\/p>\n

On the federal level, Obama is promoting the Open Government Directive<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 In January 300 “high-value” data sets were released for use on the data.gov web site.\u00a0 The type of data in cludes census data on farm operators, state-level energy usage by economic sector, bank bailout data, avaition accident statistics, and others.<\/p>\n

Not to be outdone, the UK has also launched its own Open Data site<\/a> at data.gov.uk.\u00a0 The site was created by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, an inventor of some of the concepts behind the internet.\u00a0 The UK portal contains almost three times the number of data sets that are on the US site.<\/p>\n

Other countries have followed the lead.\u00a0 New Zealand<\/a> has an Open Data site. Northern Ireland<\/a> has one too.
\nSan Francisco has released data sets around their city at datasf.org<\/a>. New York City has launched the NYC Data Mine<\/a>.
\nDevelopers are excited at the release of these public data sets and are planning to build applications and mashups around them.\u00a0 New York city started a contest with $20,000 in prizes around who can make the most innovative web application<\/a> based on Open Data.<\/p>\n
