2020 was not a good year for US federal government cybersecurity. There were numerous small breaches, and then there was the huge Solarwinds breach<\/a> revealed near the end of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cyberscurity concerns have grown and has become a top priority for Federal CIOs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March, acting DoD CIO John Sherman<\/a>, said that<\/a> “one of my key areas is to really increase our focus on zero trust and to maintain our strong focus on cyber hygiene and cyber accountability.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the stimulus funding, $10 billion<\/a> has been set aside for cybersecurity and for modernizing federal IT. This large of an amount of money shows the extent to which cybersecurity has become a priority for the federal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chris Kubic<\/a>, CISO at Fidelis Cybersecurity, said that<\/a> “reacting \u2014 the government has a bad habit of doing that. A good data security strategy is one that is more proactive and not just reactive. You could apply cyber and data security upfront to be preventive. If you implement strong access controls to protect confidentiality at your first step, there’s going to be plenty of facets for building a strong cybersecurity program.”<\/p>\n
