Digital Twins are highly accurate computer simulations that make it possible to test and model objects without needing to disturb or interact with the real object being simulated. Digital twins are useful for building new products or testing existing ones when put under severe conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scientists are now attempting to build the ultimate digital twin: a replica of the earth. The goal is to simulate the earth to unprecedented accuracy by building a digital model of the atmosphere, ocean, ice and land. The model will be able to help predict climate change and the possibility of natural disasters like floods, droughts, hurricanes, and fires. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The digital twin modeling project is being developed in Europe and is called “Destination Earth”. The complexity of the project will require a supercomputer with 20,000 graphic processors and will require 20 MW of power. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thomas Skordas<\/a>, the European Commission\u2019s Director for Digital Excellence & Science Infrastructure, said that<\/a> efforts to understand how our climate will evolve over the coming decades and how to best prevent or tackle these changes are vital both for mitigation policies and for building climate resilience. Destination Earth is a key initiative for Europe\u2019s twin digital and green transitions. It will greatly enhance our ability to produce climate models with unprecedented detail and reliability, allowing policy-makers to anticipate and mitigate the effects of climate change, saving lives and alleviating economic consequences in cases of natural disasters.\u201d<\/p>\n
