Wireless charging is one of the hottest new technologies and it seems like the logical next step as electronic devices increasingly go wireless. Wireless technology brings with it greater mobility, and has the potential to speed adoption of IoT by allowing devices to operated at some distance from a charger. But the technology behind wireless charging has been around for more than 100 years and was first demonstrated by Nikola Tesla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wireless charging for mobile phones is one of the biggest applications for wireless charging. The mobile charging market is growing at a rate of about 40 percent annually, according to a forecast by IHS Markit<\/a>. But other segments, like automotive, industrial, healthcare, and aerospace are also seeing research and investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wireless charging is making progress on multiple fronts<\/a>. In the US, the FCC has cleared wireless charging within a distance of one meter from the charger. Wireless technology is compact and can be embedded into small form-factor devices like hearing aids and fitness bands. The cost of wireless technology is dropping as it becomes more widely used and more mature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Khurram Afridi<\/a>, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Cornell, said that<\/a> “Wireless charging may sound crazy in the beginning. But if we really had that technology, it would make a lot of sense.”<\/p>\n
