Edge computing relocates storage and compute processing closer to the device or data source. It provides a distributed computing paradigm compared to the cloud’s centralized one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A huge advantage of edge computing is low latency. Because the bulk of processing happens locally with edge computing, there are minimal interactions with the cloud or communicating to data centers located far away. Bandwidth is minimized and lag times shrink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jack Pouchet<\/a>, VP of Business Development at Vertiv, said that<\/a> “this is where edge creates value. We need intelligence as close as possible to where this data is being generated. Just because a quadrillion gigabytes of data are being created, that doesn\u2019t mean we have to store it all. We need to get data to the right place, at the right time, and act appropriately on it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ghassan Abdo<\/a>, research vice president at IDC, said that<\/a> “It is clear that reducing the distance critical data must travel is seen as imperative to fueling growth and innovation for enterprises. They also want to deliver better customer experiences. All of these priorities can be addressed through edge computing solutions.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Low-latency edge computing will allow devices to process, analyze and act on information quickly, which equates to providing very fast responses. This type of quick action is important for real-time scenarios like hospital patient monitoring, traffic management, and autonomous driving. <\/p>\n
