2009 was a bad year for VC monies flowing into new startups.\u00a0 Some analysts warn <\/a>that 2011 and 2012 will be years short on innovation since the pipeline leading up to innovative new products dried up beginning in the fall of 2008.<\/p>\n

VC activity is still pretty muted, but there are a couple of areas that are seeing dollar investments:\u00a0 Big Data and Storage.\u00a0 The explosive trajectory of data growth, both structured and unstructured, in both business and consumer sectors are creating the interest in these areas.\u00a0 Om Malik reports <\/a>examples of some companies that are seeing VC investment monies:<\/p>\n

Scale Computing<\/a>\u00a0 –\u00a0 $9 million.\u00a0 Sells midmarket clustered storage solutions
\nPivot3 <\/a>— $25 million. \u00a0 Sells virtual servers and scalable storage.<\/p>\n

RainStor<\/a> — $7.5 million.\u00a0 Structured data backups.<\/p>\n
