The order comes in the wake of numerous hacking cases, like the Colonial Pipeline, Microsoft Exchange, and SolarWinds.  In all cases, infrastructure, federal agencies, and businesses were seriously affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2021\/05\/12\/executive-order-on-improving-the-nations-cybersecurity\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2021\/05\/12\/executive-order-on-improving-the-nations-cybersecurity\/\">wrote that<\/a> &#8220;Incremental improvements will not give us the security we need; instead, the Federal Government needs to make bold changes and significant investments in order to defend the vital institutions that underpin the American way of life.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Steps outlined in the executive order include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>IT service providers must tell the government about cybersecurity breaches.<\/li><li>Playbook for the federal response to cyber incidents.<\/li><li>Stresses need for federal agencies to use secure cloud services and multi-factor authentication and encryption.<\/li><li>Requires software vendors selling to the government to include security improvements.<\/li><li>Established a cybersecurity safety review board to analyze and make recommendations in the event of cyber events.<\/li><li>Improve sharing of security information between federal agencies.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chris_Krebs\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chris_Krebs\">Christopher Krebs<\/a>, former director of US cybersecurity, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/sunday-talk-shows\/553772-krebs-on-bidens-cybersecurity-executive-order-its-a-really\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/sunday-talk-shows\/553772-krebs-on-bidens-cybersecurity-executive-order-its-a-really\">said that<\/a> \u201cI think it&#8217;s a really ambitious plan and that it should be effective if implemented properly, which I have confidence in the team, both at my old agency as well as in the National Security Council and elsewhere.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div
