ECM services can provide an important component to any SOA framework.<\/p>\n

The past few years has seen an enormous amount of enthusiasm generated around SOA<\/a> — Service Oriented Architectures<\/a>.\u00a0 Clearly while the hype<\/a> has been high, there really is a lot of sustance behind the SOA initiative.\u00a0 Both its benefits<\/a> and ROI are attractive.<\/p>\n

The concept behind SOA is to create complex enterprise-wide systems based on small modular components.\u00a0 The approach is a best-practice architectural pattern\u00a0that provides great flexibility in selecting and integrating with best-of-breed components.\u00a0 It allows for wide-ranging interoperability of software developed for different platforms using different tools.\u00a0 It promotes the diffusion of information across the enterprise, providing any application with a need to incorporate the information managed by a service\u00a0an easy way to tap into it.<\/p>\n

While\u00a0today there still aren’t that many companies that have jumped full throttle into the world of SOA, that’s probably to be expected.\u00a0 Most companies are taking a slow, measured approach, with a lot of up-front experimentation and prototyping.\u00a0 But this slow adoption rate is beginning to change.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Gartner’s Charles Abrams<\/a>\u00a0first coined<\/a> the SOA acronym in 1996.\u00a0 Now Gartner<\/a> predicts that SOA will become the next dominant framework for creating and delivering enterprise software.\u00a0 They forecast that by 2008 more than\u00a080% of enterprise IT development project will be employing some form of SOA.\u00a0 And they see the rise of SOBAs<\/a> — Service Oriented Business Applications.<\/p>\n

Abrams commented in 2004 at an Gartner summit\u00a0that “They [SOAs]\u00a0will enable real-time uses of structured information to enable enterprises to be competitive.”\u00a0\u00a0 But SOAs\u00a0don’t need to be\u00a0limited to structured information.<\/p>\n

ECM<\/a> (Enterprise Content Management) Services\/SOBAs built around content and unstructured data fit well into the SOA framework<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Enterprise Repository<\/strong> – SOA ECM services allow a common unstructured repository to be accessed\u00a0by and supplement\u00a0a range of IT initiatives, like CRM<\/a>, ERP<\/a>, or SCM<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Accessibility<\/strong> – SOA ECM services integrated into\u00a0familiar front-end UIs eliminate the need to have\u00a0users log into an isolated and dedicated ECM system.<\/p>\n

Automation<\/strong> – By its very nature SOA ECM services provide a programmable interface that allows easy integration into business applications, portals and workflow processes.<\/p>\n

Formtek<\/a> has extended\u00a0its Orion product by creating SOA Web Service components.\u00a0 With a Web Service interface, unstructured data can be accessed immediately in real time from any language or platform.\u00a0 From an integrator’s perspective, what’s fantastic about the SOA Web Services\u00a0framework is that any\u00a0application, whether it is\u00a0written for Java<\/a>, .Net<\/a>\u00a0 or SAP’s NetWeaver<\/a>, is able to interface and communicate with a common ECM service interface.<\/p>\n

Formtek | Orion 5 Web Services implements standard W3C<\/a> Web Services interfaces including WSDL, SOAP, HTTP, and XML.\u00a0 Orion Web Services exposes secure Library Service<\/a> functionality, such as search, retrieval, check-in\/check-out, and version management.\u00a0 It can serve as a fundamental storage service component accessed by many IT enterprise applications for managing content and documents.<\/p>\n
