Dashboards are summarized views of data. Dashboards provide a high-level view across the breadth of possible data available on a specific topic, and they are central to apps like business intelligence and analytics. Dashboards can present data in the form of graphs and charts, making consumption of data quick and self-serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tom Sutter<\/a>, finance director at Oracle NetSuite, said that “when used correctly, dashboards can increase efficiency by making it easy to access important information straight away, so time isn’t wasted searching for reports or frequently used features. This also eliminates users being overwhelmed or bombarded by irrelevant data outside of their job requirements.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What if we could turn all the legacy buttons and dials in your home and car into a central personal dashboard? The water, gas, and electric meters. The gateway or modem on your internet. The odometer and gas meter in your car. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pete Warden recently described<\/a> an AI project on GitHub<\/a> that is trying to do just that. With a camera and some AI training, the software can continuously scrape, read, and interpret images of dials and turn the information into a data stream that can be used in an API or the source of data displayed in a personal dashboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warden <\/a>wrote that “there\u2019s a massive amount of information out in the real world that\u2019s can\u2019t be remotely monitored or analyzed over time, and a lot of it is displayed through dials and displays. Waiting for all of the systems involved to be replaced with connected versions could take decades.”<\/p>\n
