China announces a plan to become self sufficient in the production of semiconductors after the US tries to squeeze it by blocking the sales of advanced chip and semiconductor technology to China through sanctions. China is investing billions of dollars to pursue self-sufficiency, but there is worry that China may short circuit sanctions by threatening Taiwan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the crosshairs is the Taiwanese company TSMC which runs the worlds largest chip foundry and produces chips for companies like Apple, Qualcomm and Nvidia. TSMC alone accounts for more than 54 percent of global chip production, and chip production from all of Taiwan is higher than 60 percent. TSMC is ranked as the world’s 11th most valuable company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, drilling deeper, while chip production in Taiwan dominates, the ability to produce the advanced level of chips is only possible because of technology provided by the Dutch company ASML. ASML manufactures the highly advanced tool used in the manufacturing of miniature circuits on chips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C.J. Muse<\/a>, an analyst at Evercore ISI told the New York Times<\/a> that ASML is \u201cthe most important company you never heard of.” Dar\u00edo Gil<\/a>, a senior vice president at IBM, said that<\/a> ASML’s semiconductor die is \u201cdefinitely the most complicated machine humans have built.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The German newspaper Handelsblatt<\/a> called ASML Europe’s Europe\u2019s \u201cmost important trump card\u201d in the global battle for electronic components.<\/p>\n
