Last year the conspiracy theory of Bill Gates<\/a> secretly including tiny microchips in the corona virus vaccine injected into millions of people made the news. It was laughed off by mostly everyone as improbable. And it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But new nano-sized microchips have now been developed at Columbia University that may make future nanochip conspiracy theories at least a little more plausible, although still highly unlikely. Researchers have developed miniature chips the size of a dust mite that could be injected or embedded into the body. The chips could use ultrasonic wavelength transmission to send and receive signals. But even with this, a Bill Gates conspiracy isn’t very plausible — ultrasound transmissions from these chips aren’t easily trackable remotely because they require a sizable external piezoelectric transducer to pick up the signal, something that would be difficult not to notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ken Shepard<\/a>, professor of electrical engineering at Columbia University, said that<\/a> \u201cwe wanted to see how far we could push the limits on how small a functioning chip we could make. This is a new idea of \u2018chip as system\u2019\u2013this is a chip that alone, with nothing else, is a complete functioning electronic system. This should be revolutionary for developing wireless, miniaturized implantable medical devices that can sense different things, be used in clinical applications, and eventually approved for human use.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shepard said that “I’m not a fan of implanted electronics of any kind for healthy people\u2014at least anytime in the immediate future. I do not believe that the risk\/reward paradigm governing these devices makes sense when the goal is augmentation.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So far the nanochips have been used to measure body temperature, but the researchers are next trying to see if they can develop similar chips that could monitor blood pressure, glucose levels, and breathing.<\/p>\n
