Most scientists say at least a decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alastair-williams.medium.com\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/alastair-williams.medium.com\/\">Alastair Williams<\/a>, science journalist, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/one-pale-blue-dot\/how-close-are-we-to-a-quantum-future-6abb38f551f7\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/one-pale-blue-dot\/how-close-are-we-to-a-quantum-future-6abb38f551f7\">recently asked rhetorically<\/a> on Medium: &#8220;How long until that future [of practical quantum computers] arrives? Most current quantum computers have around a hundred qubits at most. That might increase to a thousand or so over the next few years, but quantum computers that are actually useful are probably at least a decade away. For now our classical world is safe.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the pace of the science seems to be moving quickly.  Or at least the hype is increasing.  On nearly a daily basis, groups around the globe are announcing &#8216;breakthroughs&#8217; in the science and capabilities of quantum computing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In just the last two weeks, there have been announcements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chinese at the University of Science and Technology in Shanghai announced a 2D programmable computer that can use up to 66 qubits.  The<a href=\"https:\/\/cosmosmagazine.com\/science\/physics\/china-demonstrates-most-powerful-quantum-computer\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/cosmosmagazine.com\/science\/physics\/china-demonstrates-most-powerful-quantum-computer\/\"> team reported that<\/a> &#8220;the sampling task finished by Zuchongzhi in about 1.2 hours will take the most powerful supercomputer at least eight years&#8230; The high-precision and programmable quantum computing platform opens a new door to explore novel many-body phenomena and implement complex quantum algorithms.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Europeans at the <a href=\"https:\/\/physicsworld.com\/a\/quantum-computer-is-smallest-ever-claim-physicists\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/physicsworld.com\/a\/quantum-computer-is-smallest-ever-claim-physicists\/\">University of Innsbruck announced<\/a> the smallest quantum computer with 24 qubits.  The tiny size was created by using calcium ions as qubits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hpcwire.com\/off-the-wire\/quantum-computing-takes-a-step-forward-with-new-qubits-with-holes\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hpcwire.com\/off-the-wire\/quantum-computing-takes-a-step-forward-with-new-qubits-with-holes\/\">European scientists announced<\/a> work that makes more practical a different kind of qubit called a &#8216;spin qubit&#8217;. The technique layers silicon and germanium just a few nanometers thick.  The technique could be used in semiconductor devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2021\/07\/harvard-led-physicists-create-256-qubit-programmable-quantum-simulator\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2021\/07\/harvard-led-physicists-create-256-qubit-programmable-quantum-simulator\/\">A team of Quantum Computer researchers from Harvard and MIT <\/a>announced what they are calling a &#8216;progrmmable quantum simulator&#8217; that uses 256 qubits.  The system is an upgrade of one developed by the team in 2017 based no 51 qubits. <a href=\"https:\/\/greiner.physics.harvard.edu\/people\/sebadi.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/greiner.physics.harvard.edu\/people\/sebadi.html\">Sepehr Ebadi,<\/a> physics student and lead author of the projects, said that &#8220;the number of quantum states that are possible with only 256 qubits exceeds the number of atoms in the solar system. This work enables a vast number of new scientific directions. We are nowhere near the limits of what can be done with these systems.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lukin.physics.harvard.edu\/people\/tout-wang\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/lukin.physics.harvard.edu\/people\/tout-wang\">Tout Wang<\/a>, researcher for the Harvard team <a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2021\/07\/harvard-led-physicists-create-256-qubit-programmable-quantum-simulator\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2021\/07\/harvard-led-physicists-create-256-qubit-programmable-quantum-simulator\/\">said that<\/a> &#8220;our work is part of a really intense, high-visibility global race to build bigger and better quantum computer. The overall effort [beyond our own] has top academic research institutions involved and major private-sector investment from Google, IBM, Amazon, and many others. &#8220;<\/p>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a class=\"lightsocial_a\"
