Privacy protection. Big Tech proudly argues that their apps provide users fine gain protection of their privacy. But, how to find where those controls are or understanding how to set them may not be as easy as it sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sundar Pichai<\/a>, CEO at Alphabet\/Google, said that <\/a>“privacy is at the heart of everything we do, and we\u2019ll keep challenging ourselves to do more with less.” Yet Google has been found<\/a> to go out of its way to track and keep user location data, despite user privacy settings that have turned off user tracking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

US attorneys argued against Google’s privacy tactics, saying that “Google\u2019s entire business model is to collect comprehensive data about every user in the service of brokering targeted ad sales. It then uses privacy concerns as an excuse to advantage itself over its competitors.” Google is not alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a New York Times opinion piece<\/a>,<\/a> Greg Bensinger<\/a> of the Times Editorial board, wrote that “technology companies\u2019 blithe disregard for consumer desires is an outgrowth of decades of permissive or nonexistent government oversight.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Privacy concerns have prompted some outside Big Tech to build their own. None of Your Business<\/a>, has proposed an HTTP standard that would invisibly communicate a common set of user privacy preferences to all apps that a user might visit using the browser.The user need only set up their preferences once, and thereafter communicate those settings to every website that the user browses to. It is called Advanced Data Protection Control.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Max Schrems<\/a>, Austrian lawyer and privacy activist, said that<\/a> “many users are probably willing to share more data with quality media, but don’t want to give their data to hundreds of external tracking companies. With ADPC, for example, a newspaper association can advertise a whitelist with which certain data can be automatically processed by quality media. The user can thus support certain groups with one click.”<\/p>\n
