5G network infrastructure spending is expected to hit a record of more than $19 billion in 2021, nearly a 40 percent increase over 2020, according to <\/a>Gartner. Spending declined slightly throughout 2020 because of the pandemic, but has picked up a lot in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michael Porowski<\/a>, senior principal research analyst at Gartner, said that<\/a> \u201cthe COVID-19 pandemic spiked demand for optimized and ultrafast broadband connectivity to support work-from-home and bandwidth-hungry applications, such as streaming video, online gaming and social media applications.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enrique Duarte Melo<\/a> and others, wrote for the Boston Consulting Grou<\/a>p that “as 5G networks evolve and become more robust over time, they will enable new and improved use cases in virtually every part of the economy. By reaching ever deeper into industries across the US, we estimate that these indirect 5G benefits will add $1.0 trillion to $1.2 trillion to GDP and create 3 million to 3.6 million new jobs from 2020 to 2030. This indirect impact represents about 70% of the total value potential from 5G.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anshel Sag<\/a>, senior analyst at Moor Insights and Strategy, wrote for Forbes<\/a> that “right now we’re in the toddler phase of 5G\u2014things no longer feel brand new, but there is still lots of room for growth and improvement. I believe that 5G’s big payoff will come once operators fully adopt 5G SA and network slicing. Operators can and should make the most of their networks and I believe that as 5G expands outside of traditional devices, usage will be on a scale never before seen on a cellular network.”<\/p>\n
