Non-IT employees are becoming increasingly tech savvy. While not trained as developers, low-code and no-code platforms are enabling employees across the business to be able to create and run new applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than half of business technologists create technology capabilities that are used beyond their own business unit, according to a survey by Gartner<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Raf Gelders<\/a>, research vice president at Gartner, said that<\/a> “technology work, once primarily the purview of dedicated IT shops, is being democratized. The best enterprises compete in the digital economy by harnessing the expertise and ingenuity of all their employees, and progressive CIOs are working with other C-suite leaders to do just that.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zoho is the example of a low-code platform. Hyther Nizam<\/a>, vice-president\u2014Product Management, Zoho, said that<\/a> “the low code platform encompasses no code as well. It attracts a lot of business users who previously did not write code. We call such users citizen developers. Some of the toughest and most complex warehousing, inventory management and student records management systems have been written on our platform by such users with little support from our side.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gelders told VentureBeat that<\/a> “this trend has been unfolding for many years, but we\u2019re now seeing a tipping point in which technology management has become a business competency. Whether all employees will soon be technical employees remains to be seen. Do your best sales reps need to build new digital capabilities? Probably not. Do you want business technologists in sales operations? Probably yes.”<\/p>\n
