50 billion IoT devices are expected to be deployed by 2030, according t<\/a>o Statista. The diversity in the many types of devices and applications that the devices support make the job of setting up networks to support a variety of hardware and software difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s where 5G slicing comes in. Slicing is a way to divide the total bandwidth into multiple separate virtual networks, and each of those networks can be dedicated for support of specific types of devices and applications. The ability with 5G to slice and specify the network configuration easily is expected to make the rollout of IoT devices much easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the benefits of 5G slicing include increased potential for revenue, better customer experience, dedicated and secure services, and faster delivery of services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An announcement from Ericsson<\/a> explained that “many use cases [of 5G slicing] will also have the potential for early deployment, including mobile cloud gaming, mission-critical push-to-talk, remote broadcast, software over-the-air updates, and predictive maintenance of rail tracks and powerlines. Network Slicing enables operators to maximize the return on investment via efficient usage and management of the network resources and provide differentiated services at scale.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul Challoner<\/a>, VP of network product solutions for Ericsson North America, told Fierce Wireless<\/a> that \u201cthe ability to offer slices is the underpinning to the success of 5G. It is a great new opportunity.”<\/p>\n
