Twitter is seeing explosive growth outside the walls of the officeplace, but is the Twitter Microblogging concept relevant in the Enterprise? \u00a0Yammer <\/a>is the best funded<\/a> (or at least very well funded) Twitter-for-the-Enterprise option out there, but it seems to be struggling. \u00a0Microsoft is also brewing up its own Twitter-clone called OfficeTalk<\/a>. \u00a0And Oracle has something similar called oraTweet<\/a>. \u00a0Both Microsoft and Oracle report success on internal trials of these products within their organizations. \u00a0But some bloggers have called enterprise microblogging ‘pointless<\/a>‘ or\u00a0‘no cigar<\/a>‘ technology.<\/p>\n

It might be too early to tell, but given some of these comments, it looks like enterprise-internal microblogging has yet to catch yet.<\/p>\n

Part of the problem seems to be related to critical mass. \u00a0The percentage of the population actively sending out microblog messages tends to be very small compared to the number of consumers of those messages. \u00a0And the chicken-before-the-egg syndrome makes it hard for people to see the value. \u00a0Instead of the celebrity Tweeters that drive up the number of users at Twitter, enterprise-internal microblogging need to rely on providing updates of what people are working on in the company — it’s maybe not as fun.<\/p>\n

Another problem is that people are already strapped for time. \u00a0 Enterprise microblogging may be providing useful information, but it is yet another medium that needs to be monitored. \u00a0Corporate email and IM already can convey much of this same information. \u00a0Microblogging needs to be able to provide a more compelling use case before it can drive greater adoption.<\/p>\n
