The trend began in 2021. Cloud vendors transitioned from offering on-premise-like hosted databases to serverless databases. Serverless databases don’t require management of either cloud compute or storage infrastructures. They offer databases services that can scale from the very tiny to very large, making it easy for businesses to get started with data in the cloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Serverless DBaaS means users can get started without the need to dive into the administration activities normally needed to run a database. Backups and recovery are automatic, and there is no worry a need to apply software patches and upgrades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ed Anuff<\/a>, Chief Product Officer at DataStax, said that<\/a> “from an enterprise IT standpoint, serverless is just way more efficient. Your total cost of ownership is significantly cheaper. Typically with data you’re sizing to your peaks. Obviously now with a serverless capability, you don’t worry about that, so your overall cost becomes a lot less.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carl Olofson<\/a>, IDC analyst, said that<\/a> “managed database services in the cloud are the future of the database business, both open source and otherwise. They offer the best value for customers, relieving them of the burden of tuning and maintaining database servers themselves, and for vendors, providing a steady, predictable revenue stream.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the last year, many serverless DBaaS systems have been launched, like DataStax Astra, PlanetScale, CockroachDB, and Couchbase. A report by the IMARC Group<\/a> found that the DBaaS market is growing annually at about 20 percent from 2021 to 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
