Enterprises that have used highly cutomized applications from vendors like SAP and Oracle often have difficult transitions when moving their data to the cloud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Gartner Research paper warns, for example, as reported by the Register<\/a>, that “enterprises transitioning to Oracle Cloud Application (OCA) fail to understand that SaaS does not allow for customization, only configuration. The OCA transition is a business transformation, not a technical migration.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oliver Betz<\/a>, SVP at SAP S\/4HANA, said that<\/a> “I’m a true believer in the cloud as the future state-of-the-art model. However, that requires standardisation which needs to happen on the customer side: they have to agree on standardised processes. You cannot have these modifications that you had in the on-premises world, that’s not how the cloud works. You will go in a direction where you have quarterly or at least twice per year releases, which you have to absorb and agree to.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An ITConvergence article<\/a> recommends that “SaaS applications can\u2019t be modified by building customizations that include changing the core product. Instead, the best approach is to use SaaS applications in the most standardized way possible, reducing costs and complexity. Organizations that accept standardization and are willing to adapt processes, rather than considering customizing SaaS applications, can realize the benefits of automatic software updates.”<\/p>\n
