Traditional computing uses transistor bits  that store data as a series of &#8220;0&#8221; or &#8220;1&#8221;.  Quantum computers are based on qubits which store data as &#8220;0&#8221;, &#8220;1&#8221;, or simultaneously both &#8220;0&#8221; and &#8220;1&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the US, some companies investigating quantum computing include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/quantum-computing\/researchers\">IBM<\/a>, Google, Microsoft, and Honywell. All are recording patents and reporting progress, but progress is inching slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/labsites.rochester.edu\/nicholgroup\/author\/jnich10\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/labsites.rochester.edu\/nicholgroup\/author\/jnich10\/\">John Nichol<\/a>, an assistant professor of physics at the University of Rochester, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/quantum-computers-transferring-electrons-397952\/#:~:text=A%20regular%20computer%20consists%20of,1%E2%80%9D%20at%20the%20same%20time.\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/quantum-computers-transferring-electrons-397952\/#:~:text=A%20regular%20computer%20consists%20of,1%E2%80%9D%20at%20the%20same%20time.\">said that<\/a> \u201ca quantum computer needs to have many qubits, and they\u2019re really difficult to make and operate. The state-of-the art right now is doing something with only a few qubits, so we\u2019re still a long ways away from realizing the full potential of quantum computers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier in the year an international team led by researchers at Argonne National Laboratories announced a new technique for constructed the qubit building block for quantum computers.  The new technique embedded single electronics in a bed of frozen neon.  <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/neon-qubit\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/neon-qubit\">The electron qubit<\/a> retained it&#8217;s state for significantly longer than what has been attained by other researchers, so the new technique appears to be promising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anl.gov\/profile\/dafei-jin\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.anl.gov\/profile\/dafei-jin\">Dafei Jin<\/a>, researcher at Argonne National Laboratory, <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/neon-qubit\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/neon-qubit\">said that<\/a> &#8220;this is a completely new qubit platform. It adds itself to the existing qubit family and has big potential to be improved and to compete with currently well-known qubits.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a class=\"lightsocial_a\"
