Here’s another sign that SOA is not on it’s deathbed: \u00a0the market for SOA middleware software is expected to more than double<\/a> by 2016. \u00a0That’s fairly healthy growth. \u00a0A report by Wintergreen Research<\/a> estimates that the SOA middleware market is currently clocking in at $3.5 billion, but they expect that it will grow to $8.2 billion by 2016. \u00a0That works out to about 15 percent annual growth.<\/p>\n

Much of the growth is coming as a result from people’s strong interest in the cloud. \u00a0The report says that “As cloud markets evolve and users only pay for the capacity they use, SOA becomes a significant aspect of all markets going forward. SOA strategies relate to providing a middleware to manage different application access in ways that position software with a more flexible capability.”<\/p>\n

There is also a move underway to move away from standard internet transport-layer protocols like HTTP, HTTPS, and Java message service (JMS) is being upgraded to MQ-based<\/a> message services, and some of the growth will come as infrastructures change.<\/p>\n

The report cites<\/a> the benefit that companies are realizing from SOA is that it \u00a0\u201ccan leverage the Internet and Internet-based standards, and has the potential to dramatically increase automated process between partners.\u201d This leads to to \u201cmore effective integration with business partners, better supply chain collaboration, increased global sourcing and more effective use of external service providers.\u201d<\/p>\n

There’s another report on SOA that’s out that comes to a similar conclusion. \u00a0That report was issued by\u00a0Global Industry Analysts<\/a> and estimates that the entire SOA software market, not just middleware, is growing rapidly and will reach $21 billion by 2015. \u00a0 [But then different analysts use different sets of parameters when defining markets and the players in them. \u00a0Gartner Dataquest<\/a>, for example, says that the SOA market is $160 billion.] <\/p>\n
