Today’s Internet experience is known as Web 2.0. It is dominated by social media, streaming, and big-tech advertising. Currently, just five companies<\/a> control 80% of the global cloud infrastructure market: Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Alibaba, and Huawei.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The successor to this is Web 3.0, but it is still a vision that isn’t well defined. Many people are equating Web 3.0 with the ‘Metaverse’, but there are competing visions for how the Internet will evolve. A key idea of Web 3.0 is that it could be more democratic and decentralized than the current Internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One vision is being developed by Inrupt<\/a>, a company developing a decentralized data-storage system called Solid that was founded by Tim Berners-Lee<\/a>. Berners-Lee is often given credit for having invented the world wide web. The Solid (SOcial LInked Data) website describes the concept as “a specification that lets people store their data securely in decentralized data stores called Pods. Pods are like secure personal web servers for data. When data is stored in someone’s Pod, they control which people and applications can access it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Berners-Lee said that “I\u2019ve always believed the web is for everyone. That\u2019s why I and others fight fiercely to protect it. The changes we\u2019ve managed to bring have created a better and more connected world. But for all the good we\u2019ve achieved, the web has evolved into an engine of inequity and division; swayed by powerful forces who use it for their own agendas.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that’s a vision that may be hard to achieve. Jack Dorsey<\/a>, co-founder of Twitter, said that<\/a>: “you don\u2019t own ‘web3.’ The VCs and their LPs do. It will never escape their incentives. It\u2019s ultimately a centralized entity with a different label. Know what you\u2019re getting into\u2026.”<\/p>\n
