Science and technology have a long history of exchanging concepts, with cross-over ideas sometimes revolutionizing our ways of thinking about something. \u00a0The speed that cross-pollination of ideas between disciplines seems to be increasing. \u00a0For example, both Gartner <\/a>and HP <\/a>recently presented a list of trends that they are seeing in the area of Business Intelligence. \u00a0Interestingly many of the trends aren’t so much focused around improved algorithms and techniques for analyzing data, they’re more about how other technologies can be applied to BI to improve accessibility, availability and efficiency.<\/p>\n

  1. In memory analytics<\/strong> — Add more DRAM and speed things up<\/li>\n
  2. Columnar databases <\/strong>— Speedier computing when focusing on database columns for certain types of data<\/li>\n
  3. Cloud — Cost efficiencies in storing data remotely and processing resources applied when appropriate<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n
  4. Interactive visualization <\/strong>— User-driven database graphic presentation<\/li>\n
  5. Integrated search <\/strong>— More of a Google-like interface<\/li>\n
  6. Mobile Business Intelligence <\/strong>— Allow BI to be accessed anywhere with mobile<\/li>\n
  7. Analytical MDM <\/strong>— Master Data Management can be made smarter<\/li>\n
  8. Data mash-ups <\/strong>— Structured and unstructured data from multiple sources mixed and molded<\/li>\n
  9. Scenario modeling <\/strong>— What-if type scenario modeling<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n

    Probably we should add Social Networking and Social Media to round out this list to an even ten.<\/p>\n

    All of these when blended with Business Intelligence can lead to some interesting capabilities. \u00a0But the reality is that many company, in fact only<\/a> 15-20% of companies are doing anything at all with Business Intelligence. \u00a0As a first step, companies need to decide what they want to measure and and only then can they determine which tools are the best ones for being able to measure it.<\/p>\n
