The storage market saw a glimmer of hope in the fourth quarter of 2009. \u00a0That was the first quarter of year-over-year market growth in one year, although .2 percent growth is a bit anemic. \u00a0IDC reported<\/a> that in the fourth quarter that storage sales grew to $7.27 billion from $7.26 billion a year ago. \u00a0Although most storage companies reported sizable reductions in revenue when all of 2009 is considered.<\/p>\n

But even though sales were down from a year ago, there was a fairly sizable increase in the total capacity of the media that was shipped. \u00a03304 petabyte-worth of capacity was shipped — an increase of 33.4 percent over the previous year. \u00a0IDC notes that driving the need for additional capacity is the growth of unstructured file-based data that is being stored.<\/p>\n
