Tomorrow, July 29th and the last Friday in July, is System Administrator Appreciation Day (SAAD), also known as Sysadmin Day. It is an annual event created by Ted Kekatos<\/a>, systems engineer at Netrix. The event was created to show appreciation for the work of IT and sysadmin workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kekatos said that<\/a> “my inspiration for the holiday was a print ad that HP was running showing their new model at the time, an HP LaserJet 4000 printer. I had just bought several of them. The ad showed a sysadmin sitting in his cube. Outside of his cube was a line of users bringing fruit baskets and flowers. I tore out the ad and showed it to my coworkers. I thought ‘Hey this is great! A sysadmin is getting flowers, fruit and wine from his users!’ So that was how System Administrator Appreciation Day 1.0 got started.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surya Varanasi<\/a>, StorCentric CTO, said that \u201cdemonstrating employee appreciation is not only the right thing to do but a fundamental cornerstone in creating and maintaining competitive advantage. This has never been truer than it is today, in the face of trends like the \u2018great resignation\u2019 and as competition for talent continues to escalate across virtually every job market.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sysadmin appreciation day website<\/a> said that “this is the day that all fellow System Administrators across the globe, will be showered with expensive sports cars and piles of cash in appreciation of their diligent work. But seriously, we are asking for a nice token gift and some public acknowledgment. It’s the least you could do.”<\/p>\n
