Igalia <\/a>is a small open-source-focused company of consultants based in Spain with offices in San Francisco, Helsinki, and Brussels. Despite its size, the company develops open-source solutions for browsers, graphics, compilers, device drivers, and virtualization. In particular, the company has made significant contributions to the Javascript language over the past decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mary Branscombe<\/a>, journalist, in an article for theNewStack<\/a>.io highlights the work that Igalia has brought to the evolution of the Javascript language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Branscombe quotes Brian Kardell, a developer advocate at Igalia, that the company is \u201ca worker-owned cooperative. We have a flat structure. There are no bosses, there are no shareholders. It\u2019s our lives, our company and we want to work on something that is valuable. For Igalia, that means focusing on open source and free software almost exclusively, and on filling gaps: we try very hard to improve what we think are failures in the status quo and create a system that is healthier for everyone.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rob Palmer<\/a>, head of Bloomberg’s Javascript Infrastructure, said that<\/a> “Because the mission [of Igalia] is so attractive, you get top tier candidates, people who have worked directly on the engines for the browsers and other projects but choose to work for Igalia because they believe in that fundamental mission to improve the web and improve the commons for all.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Igalia has made contributions to ECMAScript 2015 and ECMAScript 2017, including async and await functions. Igalia contributed to BigInt, Class Fields, and also features in development like annotations, erasable types, and MathML Core.<\/p>\n
