‘AI Art’ is the creation of artistic work using computer graphics and AI methods like deep learning. One AI method in particular, a technique called Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), has become extremely popular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GANs are a type of machine learning where two different algorithms compete against each other to create something new. The GAN technique works with a variety of data types and was first applied to images in 2014.<\/a> GANs are considered to currently be the state-of-the-art method for generating realistic synthetic images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The availability of cheap compute cycles in the cloud, deep learning algorithms like GAN, and blockchain and NFTs has enabled a surge in the creation of art using AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But is ‘AI Art’ an example of machine creativity or human?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aaron Hertzmann<\/a>, a principal scientist at Adobe Research, said that<\/a> “AI tools are just like any other technology. The tools benefit art, empower artists, and create new forms of expression.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Camille Lenglois<\/a>, directory of Paris’s Pompidou Centre, Europe’s largest collection of contemporary art, said that<\/a> “machines do not yet have the ‘critical and innovative capacity’. The ability to generate realistic images does not make one an artist.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But some like Mois\u00e9s Horta Valenzuela<\/a>, sound artist, argue that the art is in the creation of the tool<\/a>. \u201cThe generative or system-making is the artwork, rather than the outputs. The output is just a reflection of the system that I created and also of the data and representations that I give to the system.\u201d<\/p>\n
