A recent report by UCL, the University of Manchester, and the Law Society <\/a>highlights the barriers to adopting technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) in the legal services sector. The survey of over 650 solicitors reveals that less than a third (32%) use “lawtech” on a daily basis. Lawtech encompasses a range of technologies aimed at supporting or replacing traditional legal methods, including document automation, advanced chatbots, predictive AI, and knowledge management systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The findings reveal that legal professionals primarily use lawtech for routine administrative tasks rather than harnessing its potential for more complex legal matters. While respondents acknowledge the benefits of lawtech in improving service quality and workflow efficiency, there is a significant lack of confidence in using it effectively at an individual level. Many do not perceive a direct correlation between lawtech adoption and personal career advancement, leading to skepticism about its impact on promotions and pay raises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite these concerns, the survey indicates a growing willingness among legal professionals to engage with lawtech. A substantial portion believes they would be capable of utilizing lawtech if they receive initial assistance or ongoing support. However, the report emphasizes the crucial role of senior leaders and decision-makers in fostering a culture of technology adoption. Encouragement, support, investment in knowledge and skills development, and clear connections between organizational benefits and individual gains are needed to overcome resistance and drive effective lawtech implementation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The legal profession stands at a crossroads, where embracing technology is essential for staying competitive and keeping pace with other professional service industries. It is crucial for senior managers and leaders within law firms to recognize lawtech as a strategic priority and invest not only in tools but also in the necessary training and support. By capitalizing on the potential benefits of lawtech while mitigating risks, the legal sector can navigate the transformative possibilities that lie ahead and effectively leverage technology to enhance service delivery, improve efficiency, and drive growth.<\/p>\n
