The next computing paradigm (NCP) <\/a>is a concept that has evolved to embrace the many different elements of high performance, edge and cloud computing, AI, security, and emerging areas like digital twins and metaverse under one theme. This paradigm is a holistic approach to creating future computing systems that genuinely meet social needs while keeping people safe and respecting planetary boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Companies are working towards this vision<\/a> by integrating the web, cyber-physical systems, cloud, IoT, digital twins, and AI into a coherent, federated ecosystem that intertwines the computing realm with the physical world. This entails spatial computing, AI at the edge, dynamic web integrations, user-centric models, and intelligent, efficient, and trustable orchestration of distributed services. That’s a lot!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The implications of this paradigm shift are profound. It promises to simplify things for users, respect safety, privacy, and the limits of the physical world, and be orchestrated and enabled by a trusted guide, your assistant, and a pathfinder. This paradigm also emphasizes sustainability, and respecting planetary limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Future improvements are possible in the areas of AI, new hardware, cybersecurity, and sustainability, with European sovereignty woven throughout the recommendations. The HiPEAC Vision 2024<\/a> identifies these \u2018leadership races\u2019 as the main direction for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the realization of this technology is a work in progress, the seeds of this 2024 vision build upon previous work. However, given the dizzying pace of technological change, particularly in AI, the ultimate goal is constantly morphing and changing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next computing paradigm represents a convergence of key technologies into a coherent, federated ecosystem. It is a vision of the future that respects safety, privacy, and sustainability while meeting social needs, but likely it is a goal that will never truly be achieved. There will always be more to do.<\/p>\n
