Security:  A False Sense of Security"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>73 percent of companies <a title=\"Accenture study on data breaches\" href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/perception-of-data-security-at-odds-with-reality-accenture-study-finds-2010-04-27?reflink=MW_news_stmp\" target=\"_blank\">say they do a good job<\/a> at securing personally identifiable information. \u00a0 That&#8217;s sensitive information that includes name, address, date of birth, race, National ID\/social security number and medical history. \u00a0But the reality is that 58 percent of those same companies say that they&#8217;ve had at least one data breach over the last two years. \u00a0The information was collected by <a title=\"Accenture data privacy study\" href=\"http:\/\/accenture.com\/dataprivacyresearch\" target=\"_blank\">Accenture <\/a>and Ponemon Institute.<\/p>\n<p>70 percent of the organizations think that they have an obligation to secure personal information which they collect. \u00a0But as many as 45 percent disagreed with the idea that their customers should be able to have a say about what type of information they collect about them.<\/p>\n<p>The report also notes that only 18 percent of all data loss are the result of cybercrime. \u00a0 Breakdown of internal safeguards are much more likely to be the reason for security loss. \u00a057 percent of organizations have experienced data loss due to business or system failure, and another 48 percent attributed data loss to employee negligence.<\/p>\n<p>From the customer perspective, 70 percent say that maintaining the privacy of their personal data is very important to them. \u00a0A majority of customers feel that they should &#8216;own&#8217; or have complete control over who can access their data. \u00a0Customers feel that they should be able to review the information that is stored about them and be able to see who has had access to their data. \u00a0But 42 percent of customers are skeptical that organizations that have access to some of their information don&#8217;t do enough to safeguard it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a class=\"lightsocial_a\"
