AIIM<\/a>, in collaboration with Questex Media Group<\/a>, this week (November 6-8)\u00a0launched the ECM West<\/a> Conference & Expo in San Jose at the McEnery Convention Center.\u00a0 Vendors included EMC, Stellent, Eastman Kodak, IBM, Fujitsu and Visioneer.\u00a0 The theme for the ECM West conference is “Creating Business Value from Your Information Assets”.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I attended ECM West all day Tuesday.\u00a0 Clearly the overall conference attendance must be a disappointment to AIIM.\u00a0\u00a0They\u00a0expected\u00a0attendance on the order of 3000, but the actual attendance is probably closer to 1000, or perhaps even less.\u00a0 The number of exhibitors was small and the aisles were empty.\u00a0 Exhibition-only attendees were upgraded to full session entrance.\u00a0 This was a first time event for holding the AIIM conference on the west coast, and that probably partly accounts for the low attendance.<\/p>\n

This compares to the AIIM & ON DEMAND Expo held in Philadelphia this past May.\u00a0 At that event there were more than 20,000 attendees from 50 states and 62 countries, 450 exhibiting companies and 250 members of the press and analyst community.<\/p>\n

Neither Microsoft nor Oracle had a presence at ECM West.\u00a0 IBM had a booth, but no trace of FileNet.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Google’s Matthew Glotzbach, head of Google Enterprise Product Line, gave\u00a0a keynote speech\u00a0“Search to Start, Not to Find”.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Glotzbach talked about a new generation of user within the enterprise.\u00a0 Users have been educated from their exposure to high-tech consumer technologies and now expect the same\u00a0kind of technologies to be available for them to use to get their jobs done.\u00a0 He sees\u00a0a continuing\u00a0evolution from office workers to knowledge workers to now a new breed of worker who need a new class of business tools.<\/p>\n

While Glotzbach’s keynote was interesting,\u00a0Google’s offering in the area of Enterprise of Search and on-line applications still falls far short of what most companies require.\u00a0 Google has been able to vault into first place\u00a0with their\u00a0Internet Search engine because of their patented page rank algorithm.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But Internet search doesn’t map well to data stored within the firewall of a business.\u00a0 Business data is typically not stored as inter-related HTML pages where the Google page rank algorithm can be applied.\u00a0 Because of that, Google has no real breakthrough technology for handling enterprise search.\u00a0 When it comes to\u00a0searching structured and unstructured business data, the algorithms used by vendors like FAST and Endeca are far ahead of Google.<\/p>\n

Google has introduced the concept of a hardware\u00a0appliance called Google OneBox<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0Via connectors, it\u00a0allows search over CRM, ERP and business intelligence solutions.\u00a0 But the interface seems to be too simplistic.<\/p>\n

Next year’s AIIM conference will be held on April 16-19, 2007 at the Boston Convention and Exposition Center.<\/p>\n
