SOA is becoming accepted as a ‘Best Practice’.\u00a0\u00a0 And adoption rates of SOA are soaring.\u00a0 But that doesn’t mean that SOA doesn’t have its warts too.\u00a0 An article<\/a> on TechTarget highlights some perspectives of SOA thought-leaders about some aspects of SOA that are less than perfect.<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0 Complexity.<\/strong>\u00a0 Or\u00a0what \u00a0Gartner’s Roy Schulte refers to\u00a0as the\u00a0problem\u00a0of “Too Many Moving Parts”.\u00a0 SOA provides a framework for being able to consolidate data sources and services from many sources in a platform agnostic way.\u00a0 An advantage of SOA is that once the framework is in place, incremental upgrades\u00a0to the\u00a0individual service components allows functionality within the system to evolve quickly.\u00a0 This avoids the nightmare associated with all-or-nothing upgrades typical of monolithic applications.\u00a0 But\u00a0when all the pieces of the system are moving along different version pathways, the system becomes incredibly complex and there are many issues raised around governance, configuration, testing and version control.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0 SOA projects needs to be better aligned with business goals<\/strong>.\u00a0 Redmonk’s James Governor criticizes many companies as approaching SOA as a “Science Project”.\u00a0 Technology driven solely\u00a0for the sake of\u00a0technology seldom solves business problems.\u00a0 The ‘A’ in SOA is about architecture and that component is often overlooked in favor of ‘S’, the services.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0 SOA needs to be adopted with an enterprise mindset<\/strong>.\u00a0 Eric Newcomer, CTO of Iona Technologies, comments that it is hard for companies to change their mindset from one where component\/service software is developed and purchased at the department level.\u00a0 Architecture needs to be driven more\u00a0by a big-picture approach where services can be developed that are\u00a0useful across departments and throughout the enterprise.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0 Lack of SOA-skilled resources and personnel<\/strong>.\u00a0 Ron Schmeltzer of ZapThink comments that the demand for enterprise architect resources outstrips the pool of available resources.<\/p>\n

A lot of the hype behind SOA is not without merit, but like anything else, it has its own set of issues and problems.<\/p>\n
