Organizations are being deluged by the amount of content that is being created, and to help them manage their unstructured content, \u00a0they’re\u00a0frequently turning to Enterprise Content Management (ECM). \u00a0ECM is an all-inclusive term that includes a wide variety of technologies, ranging from document and records management, to email and image management, digital asset management, scanning, forms processing, and more. \u00a0For many organizations, coming up with a plan of action for implementing ECM can be challenging.<\/p>\n

To help guide companies and organizations through the maze of ECM options, a roadmap model called the ECM Maturity Model<\/a> was created in 2009. \u00a0The authors of the roadmap document are from WiPro, The Real Story Group, Hartman Communications, and Smigiel Consulting Group.<\/p>\n

The ECM Maturity Model was recently updated (late June, 2010), and version 2<\/a> of the document is now available. \u00a0The model identifies 13 different maturity levels of ECM competency in an organization as shown in the diagram below, and each of the levels is grouped according to the categories of Human, Information and Systems. \u00a0The maturity model helps you rank your organization in each level across the three categories, ranging from excellent (5) to poor (1). \u00a0The five levels of maturity are named:<\/p>\n

  2. Incipient<\/li>\n
  3. Formative<\/li>\n
  4. Operational<\/li>\n
  5. Pro-Active<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n

    After ranking your organization, you can visually see how you stack up on the maturity map. \u00a0The results will look something like the following.<\/p>\n

    The ECM maturity model tries to identify where your organization stands relative to managing data within your organization. \u00a0It provides a framework for ECM that clearly shows you where you are today and that points the way towards areas where you can improve.<\/p>\n
