Web Services are powering high-end enterprise IT make-overs with adoption of SOAs<\/a>.
\nBut\u00a0Web Services\u00a0are also the force behind a grass-roots phenomena being called ‘Mashups’<\/a>
\nIt’s Web Services for the masses.<\/p>\n

What’s happened is that Internet powerhouses like Google<\/a>, Yahoo!,<\/a> eBay<\/a> and Amazon<\/a> have introduced\u00a0Web Service<\/a> and RSS feed<\/a> interfaces to the data they manage.\u00a0 The data they provide is available for anyone and the cost is either free or very low.<\/p>\n

Mashups are applications or sets of web pages that consolidate data from multiple sources\u00a0and create unique combinations.\u00a0 Many of the applications that people have come up with have a mapping component based on Google maps<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mashup website examples include\u00a0Platial<\/a>, a site\u00a0that combines geotagging<\/a>\u00a0with Google Maps\u00a0— here people can\u00a0pin their personal\u00a0commentary or recollections\u00a0associated to\u00a0spot on the map.\u00a0 Another example is Zillow<\/a> which\u00a0has collected data on more than 60 million homes and overlays the data and home valuation estimates on a map\u00a0with parcel information.<\/p>\n

Mashups are part of a trend towards enabling people to better interact with information available\u00a0from the net.\u00a0 Consider\u00a0Microsoft’s ‘Live ClipBoard’<\/a> concept that was recently demo-ed by CTO Ray Ozzie<\/a>.\u00a0 In a few strokes, Ozzie\u00a0created an RSS Feed of Flickr<\/a> images and piped it into a desktop folder so that the folder would automatically update as new images were added to the web site.<\/p>\n

More and more easy-to-use tools like this based on light-weight technologies are becoming available to pull together\u00a0information and\u00a0for\u00a0presenting it in new and compelling formats.<\/p>\n

Most of the\u00a0mashup activity has been focused on the consumer side, which follows the recent trend for the consumer market to be driving new technology.\u00a0 But what\u00a0does this mean for\u00a0the enterprise?\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘Enterprise mashups’ or ‘Composite Enterprise Applications’ have the potential to feed a wave of Business Intelligence.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0ability to define custom presentations created from a combination of\u00a0data\u00a0taken and processed from many different corporate, partner and external data repositories is very powerful.\u00a0\u00a0 The concept is similar to\u00a0data warehousing , but with mashups based on web services, the data is real-time, and the\u00a0presentation is more moldable into\u00a0appealing and more informative formats.\u00a0 It has the potential to take ‘what if’ to the next level.<\/p>\n

Consider an enterprise application that could pull together the various company-wide data and information feeds to create a project composite resource that might\u00a0be a combination of\u00a0project calendar\/task list with published schedules, specifications and working drawings from a document repository, related emails messages from an email store, project member availability\u00a0taken from Outlook calendars, etc.<\/p>\n

Companies like ActiveGrid<\/a> now offer frameworks that accelerate the creation of enterprise mashups using light-weight\u00a0technologies based on Web Services and AJAX.<\/p>\n

Core to the success of Enterprise Mashups is being able to expose enterprise data\u00a0via web services.\u00a0 The Formtek | Orion<\/a> repository Web Service interface is designed to facilitate Enterprise mashups.\u00a0 Content securely managed within the Formtek repository can form an important component of any composite application.\u00a0<\/p>\n
