{"id":1582,"date":"2010-10-11T07:00:18","date_gmt":"2010-10-11T15:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.formtek.com\/blog\/?p=1582"},"modified":"2010-10-11T07:00:18","modified_gmt":"2010-10-11T15:00:18","slug":"social-media-has-social-media-plateaued","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/social-media-has-social-media-plateaued\/","title":{"rendered":"Social Media: Has Social Media plateaued?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"_mcePaste\">Research results from Forrester are being spun to suggest that Social Media may be hitting a ceiling. \u00a0<a title=\"Forrester survey on Social Media users\" href=\"http:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20100928005371\/en\/Forrester-Social-Networking-Adoption-Charges-Growth-Social\" target=\"_blank\">Forrester <\/a>has categorized Social Media user types into groups, something Forrester calls Global Social Technographics:<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Creators<\/li>\n<li>Conversationalists<\/li>\n<li>Critics<\/li>\n<li>Collectors<\/li>\n<li>Joiners<\/li>\n<li>Spectators<\/li>\n<li>Inactives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>Creators are those people that are\u00a0most active in creating and uploading content to Social Media sites. \u00a0All the way on the other end of the scale\u00a0are the inactives\/lurkers, those users that consume content but never contribute.<\/div>\n<div>Forrester reports that even though users are becoming more comfortable with Social Media, only 23 percent are &#8216;creators&#8217;,\u00a0those users who create content by writing blogs, upload videos and create links to other content.<\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">A similar survey by <a title=\"Survey by ExactTarget on Social Media\" href=\"http:\/\/email.exacttarget.com\/sff\/research_part3.html\" target=\"_blank\">ExactTarget <\/a>estinmated that only 10 percent of Social Media users are in a category, which is similar to Forrester&#8217;s creators, that they refer to\u00a0as &#8216;Megaphones&#8217;. \u00a0A <a title=\"Harvard on Twitter\" href=\"http:\/\/hbswk.hbs.edu\/item\/6156.html\" target=\"_blank\">Harvard <\/a>report that looked at the users of Twitter found similar results, that about only 10 percent of the users were creating all the content.<\/div>\n<div>Here is the graphic from the <a href=\"http:\/\/email.exacttarget.com\/sff\/research_part3.html\">ExactTarget <\/a>report.<\/div>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/formtek.com\/blogimages\/exacttarget.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div>\n<div>The Forrester survey laments that while the number of users of Social Media continues to climb, the actual number of creator types may be declining. \u00a0The report writes that\u00a0&#8220;one-third of online consumers in the U.S. regularly watch user-generated videos on sites like YouTube. But only 10 percent of U.S. online consumers upload videos they&#8217;ve created to public sites. The traits required to be a [person who creates digital content] are unique, and at this moment, the consumer market interested in these behaviors has plateaued.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div>Forrester says that between 2009 and 2010 that the number of creators fell from 24 to 23 percent. \u00a0Similarly, the number of critics fell from 37 to 33 percent.<\/div>\n<div>Forrester worries that \u00a0&#8220;a lack of growth in this area translates into a lack of fresh ideas, content, and perspectives&#8221;. \u00a0That may be, but the percentages they report don&#8217;t show the total number of creators, and given the growth of total users, a number which must be increasing. \u00a0A drop in a few percent seems relatively insignificant. \u00a0The fact is that there is still a lot of user-generated content out there that continues to grow.<\/div>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a class=\"lightsocial_a\"
